Last summer of 2013 my family traveled to Maui, Kauai, and Oahu to celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. My brother, his wife, and my niece came along and we managed to escape into the beauty of Hawaii for 2 weeks. Highlights included lush tropical hikes, bamboo forests, Hana highway, Kualoa ranch, and the Kalalau trail leading up to the most gorgeous waterfall I’ve ever visited, Hanakoa Falls. Mindblowing. Surfing on north shore Oahu was thrilling too, but the best experience by far was the night scuba dive off the shores of Maui where our Divemaster led my brother and I into an underwater sea cave filled with a nest of giant sleeping sea turtles. I’ve never been in such awe of nature in any other single point of my life before this. Absolutely incredible.
Oh, and that first photo of the sea turtle was taken at the same spot they filmed the survivor’s camp on the tv show LOST. She crawled out of the ocean and took a nap right in front of me just as a crazy rainbow exploded above us. Disney can’t make this stuff up. Best part, I had that moment all to myself.
